Evaluation question 2

Liam Hughes Slidely by Slidely Slideshow

Through the use of Slidely I created a montage of images where we showed the different characters. Where we challenge the conventions by using two female bullies dressed in mean girl clothes, bullying a male character which isn't actually what is usually shown in stereotypical high school drams. Usually we have the female characters bullying other females because females are shown to be weaker than males but in this case the females are shown to have more power which is strange and challenges the conventions.

Evaluation question 3

KIZOA PRESENTATION

We did a teen drama which we based around films like not another teen movie and mean girls. These are both set in high schools so we think that their distributors like paramount productions would be a great company to also distribute ours. Because it is a teen drama we had many more titles then films that are youth based like honeytrap.

Interview: Shaniqua Parker

What role do you play in the film?

'I play one of the mean girls. I was definitely out of my comfort zone as i am not usually like that but it was a very fun and interesting role to play.'

How do you think the audience will view Shaniqua?

'I think that the audience will view Shaniqua as rude and malicious as she seems like she influences Shaznay (the other mean girl) to participate in the bullying. The audience will not like her as she bullies Liam and they will feel sympathy for Liam. Not even i would like her and i'm playing her role! Aha!'

Did you get on well with the casts?

'Yes! they were lovely to work with, we had lots of fun and laughed a number of amount of times. Of course there were minor disagreement, but they were resolved in the end.'

If you were to do this whole experience again, what would you change?

'I would wouldn't change a thing because through the mistakes i made, i learnt i lot a lot of things. ESPECIALLY time management. Time management is so important! Without time management there is no organisation and then you delay on both the quality and quantity of your work'.

Teamwork

Teamwork is extremely important when making an opening an opening sequence and doing blogs as without it we wouldn't get a lot of work done. I learnt how to listen to others in my group and make sure I was on time to do the work and that we would all voice our ideas and take them into consideration.

One of the biggest issues we had is time management. We had to re-do some scenes as they were shaky so it took a lot of patience and understanding to make sure there was no disagreements and arguments. However, we would always end up finding a solution.

Sound-Mercia

Sound was quite difficult to figure out as we had to choose a sound that would match the opening sequence. I used garage band to make some beats which suited our opening sequence. As it was difficult making a beat just using garage band, i used clip grab and looked on you-tube to find other beats which matched our opening sequence. I had to make sure that it was not copy right. After i finally found a sound i was happy with and my group was also happy with, i imported it in to garage band and added some of the beats that i had put together beforehand. When i was completely satisfied with the sound, i then imported the sound onto final cut pro where the opening sequencewas to see if the sound will go well with the film.

What could be improved in our title sequence?

  • One of the things that i think should be improved on in our title sequence is the sound. The sound could have had more levels of loudness and quietness for example in the scene where Shaniqua is throwing Liam's book, the sound of the beat would've quieten down so that we can hear how harsh the book has been thrown. Small things like this could create a huge impact and allowed the audience to feel emotion.

  • Another thing which could've been improved on in the opening sequence are the title credits. Some of the title credits transition on one shot to another. It would look more professional if the title credit just stayed on one shot.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          disney animated GIF

What went well in our opening sequence?

Questionnaire-Audience feedback

I asked some people if they would fill in a questionnaire after they finished watching our title sequence.

This is one of the questionnaire feedback:

What are your intitial thoughts of our title sequence?
I really enjoyed watching your title sequence, I especially like the way you changed the colour of the scenes to show that it was something that had happened to the boy in the past.

What was you feeling/your emotions while watching the title sequence?
I felt sympathy for the boy and I could relate to him as I have been picked on in the past so I know that other teenagers can also relate.

Would you watch it in the cinema?
I would definitely watch it again but I would only watch it in the cinema if it was longer.

What is one thing you would improve about the sequence?
I would make it longer.

What would you rate the title sequence out of 10?
8.5

Location

Initially, we were going to film our opening sequence in a high school. As you lot can see in the film, that is no longer the case, as our old secondary school did not allow us to film in the school so we had to adjust some changes. We filmed in 3 different locations which where: Outside Mount Carmel (our old secondary school), a park near archway (which some mount Carmel students attend after school) and lastly an estate.

We filmed outside Mount Carmel because even though we were unable to film inside we still wanted the film to have some type of shots of the high school as the title of our film is 'HIGH SCHOOL from hell.' In addition, most of our group attended the high school and had experienced 5 years and during those 5 years we had seen people who experienced bullying and fit the mean girl stereotypes so it felt more natural filming in that habitat. We wanted our audience to feel what we felt when watching other individuals going through bullying.

We filmed in the park as we thought that it would complement our main plot well. Also, we knew that we would be able to film some very good angles in that specific park. Furthermore, the park was very empty the majority of times, especially school hours therefore we did not have to worry about bothering others.

Lastly, we filmed in an estate because a lot of crimes seem to happen in an estate so we figured that it would be a perfect spot for us to do the scene where the mean girls physically attack Tom. The estate also had a variety of good location shots. I would say that the estate was the most difficult location to film as people live there so we had to be aware of our surroundings and make sure that we were not disturbing anyone.

Overall, the location shots were a success and helped show to the audience the different flashbacks.

Costume

Costume is an important part of the character as your looks portrays how people are going to perceive you. The costume allows the audience to have a better understanding of who the characters are and what part they play/ the social group they belong to. The mean girls wore dark colours to convey that they are mean as dark colours symbolise darkness and coldnesss. We used hoodies for Tom to hide his face as we wanted to show how Tom likes to be in the background and how lonely he is. Tom would also use the hoodie to cover up his bruises and scars. He would also wear glasses and always carry around books to emphasise how much he loves to study.
These are some images of the types of costumes we have used:

what i learnt while using the software

Motion- I learnt how to use it better to my ability. I learnt how to do students with it and I've bee able to create title sequenees and know how to make them look good.
Final cut pro- first time using it ever was when staring media. It was a great experience. I've learned how to do transitions, slow motion, change the colour and add sound.

Garage band- I kinda knew how to use this before starting our opening sequence but ive been able to developers these skills in a better way so I van now later in like great a song I could be proud of.

my view on plot changes

We changed our plot from seeing all the different cliche (stereotype groups) to one that's less funny and has a bigger impact.

We made the plot more relatable to. So the audience can actually share emotions with the lead character. This would create a bigger impact on the audience making them remember the film more.

The new plot is basically we have the present day and the past. We represent the past with flashbacks. In the present day we see the main character walking home and in the flashbeck we see him getting beat up and Bullied by two girls. So the theme Is bullying which is very relatable.

blooging feedback

To make my blog better I was told to:

1) upload blogs every 3-4 times a week and make sure to not upload them all on one day but to separate them out.

2) was also told to change colour of my text due to it not being able to be read on blog background. We sorted that out by changing the background to a nature one instead of the red one.

3) I was also behind on blogs when I first started so was told I had to catch up and I think I did a good job in doing that.

How we found motion

How to use Motion

Choice of fonts.

Why did we choose these fonts?

The reason behind our choice of fonts was the fact that we needed something clear yet simple, something appealing to the target audience but would suit our sequence at the same time. The fonts we chose were the ones we found on our motion templates we believed that they gave a more simple yet sofisticated look to our opening sequence. So through the use of motion we created our titles and coloured them white in order to suit the themes we were using.

What made our sequence so effective?

What made our sequence so effective?

I believe that what made our sequence so effective was the use of our establishing shots, I believe  that through the use of those shots we really developed the setting and showed off the surrounding area. They also helped with distinguishing the change in location and the difference between flashbacks and present time.

How we worked as a team

In my opinion, I think as a team we worked great. Each one of us voiced our own opinions and views about their ideas and thoughts about the title sequence. We all listened to each other ideas and took them all into consideration. We all helped each other to get the job done such as the filming, editing, mise en scene and sound.

However, of course we did stumble against some problems. One of the main ones was the lack of communications. As one of the member of the group doesn't have a phone, it was difficult to know where she was and how long she would be to come to that particular location. Another one, was timing issues. As we had to re shot some scenes, we were anxious that weren't going to finish by time and get it done at a good and professional quality

Blogging design- Theme,colours and fonts

We overall decided on our theme because we believed that it was very clear and easy to read and made our work look efficient and presentable. I feel like the nature vibe is rather ironic considering one of our locations is actually set in a park but other than that I think it just has a very nice layout.

Costume Reflection

Overall we didn't really have many problems with costumes or Mise En Scene but we did come across a few for example:

-Because we have to shoot some of the scenes again we had to wear the same clothes we wore the first time round which created some problems
-I also had bruises in one shot but in the next I didn't but luckily we were able to hide then
-Mercia also forgot to wear heels to one of the scenes which cause some speculation

How we worked as a team

Teamwork

Overall I feel like we worked as a team really well with very little problems, I feel like filming made us all closer as a group and we really began to understand eachother and found it easy for us to contribute to new ideas and criticisms.

The only problem we really had was communication and keeping to our timetable because when either of these two things mess up its very hard to get back on track but we managed to do this and finish filming. If I could I would choose the same people to work with again because they were really easy to get along with.

Interview with the actor

What was It like working with the rest of the cast and crew?

It was a very enjoyable experience and was very calm and thought out, the directer had a clear vision on what she wanted to achieve which made it easier on us because all we had to do was turn up and act. Everyone was really friendly very efficient.

What did you find the hardest thing about filming?

One of the hardest things about filming was the location changes and the frequent weather changes which made filming unpredictable and risky because we couldn't have one shot in the rain and the same shot sunny at the same time it just wouldn't work which made it sort of tricky and hard to judge.

What was your favourite thing about filming?

I really enjoyed the props we used such as he glasses and the clothes they wore, I also liked the fact that we were able to film in different locations and in flashbacks which gave more freedom and change.

Interviewing Shaznay Smith

Interviewer: How did you find playing the role of Shaznay smith?

Shaznay: it was definitely an interesting role to play. It was hard to remain in character, as me and Shaniqua (the other popular girl) was finding it hard not to laugh

Interviewer: How was it like on set?

Shaznay: oh god! Filming on the set was a dream come true. It was so fun and interesting to film with the other cast ad the film director and editors

Interviewer: Are you worried about how people would view the movie?

Shaznay: well... I definitely think everyone in the studios I worried and anxious on how the audience will react to the movie. But we all worked so hard in the movie, so I'm sure people would love the movie as much as we do.

Interviewer: Do you regret anything from the movie?

Shaznay: No! Not even one tiny thing. I enjoyed every minute of the process to make the movie. This is an opportunity that I will never forget or take it for granted.

Interviewer: well that all I have for you today... Thank you for listening and answering all the questions I have provided. Best luck to the movie.

how our team work went to me

I think without team work we could not have got this done. Our team was able to work together wel and get things done. We were able to split jobs up, which got out opening sequence done faster and it meant we were able to be confident in what we were doing withput paniking alot about not completing it on time. We also kept on contact with each other everyday. We planned on what to do the day before.

There was some stressful times with each other due to the fact we were under alot of stress just in case we xould not get it done but we all pulled through it. It was great working in a team like this  we made sure we were all okay . Ll and that if we need any help then we would be there

interview with the editor

What was it like working with the crew?

It was very intresting, I had worked with in the past doing minor work so this was a bit strange for us but we are good friends and it was great being able to work with them.

How hard was it to edit the opening sequence?

It was pretty hard at points due to final cut pro being glitchy but I was able to sort that out and work past it. We used different transtions and changed the colour of some segmant we also used slow motion which I was happy to use because it show what we know about final cut pro

What do you think of the final product?

I think its actually really well done. There is a range of shots used, the sound changed when it needs to, I used a trange of effecta to help crwat the flash back look better. I think overal it was good there could of been some changes here and there but norhings pergect right.

what I think could of went better

What could of went better:

1) communication/time
The comnuincation was really good between our group. There was a problem with trying to communicate with someone due to the lack internet conncetion at times. We used a facebook group chat to keep in contact everyday.this meant that they were late sometimes and were not unable to turn up.

2) shots
Even though our shota were amazing, our first shots were to shaky. So we had to re-shoot a wholr flash back which took up a bit of time bit we were able to re-shoot in the half term.

Feedback from brother.

what i think went well

The things that went well while filming and editing:

1) our shot
We were able to get a wide range of shots, which allowes us to show different shot types and we were able to show where our location was shot. We were avle to get shots from different positions ans angles.

2) final piece
Not only did we edit and film in the time we had but were did a pretty good job id I do say myself. We had some little issues here and there but other then that it went well. We worked well as a group giving each other jobs to do but at the same time keeping everyone in the group involved with desicions.

3) our timing
We were able to get timing right. We got filming done on time which meant rhe last two weks we could focus on the sound and motion. we also got it in on time.

What we changed

Changes

Since we first started filming we have changed many things ranging from our sound to the whole plot itself. Since our first few rough cuts we have changed the sound, we changed our sound about 3 times until we found the best sound we believed brought out the sort of emotive and sympathetic feelings we were trying to get the audience to feel towards the victim.

We also changed the locations a few tines to fit our time tables and the sort of themes we were going for, we also changed them due to risk assessments such as the weather and heights and didn't want to put the equipment at risk of damage. We also changed the names of some of our characters as shown during the filming process below.
